Singing to Eloise

Singing to Eloise has become so much more than simply singing my baby girl to sleep.  When I first started singing to her I could hardly finish a song without getting choked up by the words and the love I felt for this new little person who now belonged to me.  Gratefulness would well up inside, overwhelming me and I would pause, swallow, and whisper the words until my voice returned.  As time passed, however, I got to where I could finish most of the songs, although I still get choked up from time to time even now.

When I ran out of songs I could remember in my head, I asked Mom if she had any old hymnals.  She had two and she brought them to me.  I had so much fun looking through them and singing bits and pieces of several old favorites to Eloise.  I was so excited to remember them all, I could hardly settle on one before I was drawn to another old favorite and then another and another.  Not only were the words of these precious songs a balm for my tired and sometimes worried mind, turning the event of rocking Eloise to sleep into a time of devotion, but they brought so many sweet memories to the surface as well.

One minute I would be sitting in my home church, Jenks Avenue Church of Christ in Panama City, FL, the place that will always be dearest to my heart as it was the place I first REALLY believed and wanted to spend my life following Christ.  I have so many dear people and sweet memories of that place and so many songs to remind me of it.

The next moment I am at Camp Wiregrass in Enterprise, AL.  I was a camper and then a counselor from the 2nd grade through my college years and the songs I sing to Eloise take me to the chapel there surrounded by woods, sitting shoulder to shoulder on a hot summer morning with some of the best people in this world.

Another moment I am at the Auburn Christian Student Center sitting among 200 or so of my college peers and fellow Christians, singing at the top of our lungs to the Lord we loved.  The two years I spent there were two of my all time favorite and as I sing the songs of that time, I smile down at my baby girl hoping the same wonderful college experience for her.

I even spend a few minutes in China where, to combat loneliness and culture shock I would sit in the floor of my apartment, open my "borrowed" devotional book from the Auburn Christian Student Center, and sing and sing and sing until my soul felt closer to home even as I was so far away. When my Chinese students asked me to sing, those were the songs I chose.

The words to these sweet songs make me smile because many of them are very old fashioned, but that just makes them all the more dear.  Like sitting and talking with my grandfather who loved old poetry, they make me feel safe, loved, and watched over.  "And He walks with me and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own..."

"Love so amazing, so divine demands my soul, my life, my all."

"Who knows your disappointments?  Who hears each time you cry?  Who understands your heartache? Who dries the tears from your eyes? Do you know my Jesus?  Do you know my friend?  Have you heard He loves you and that He will abide 'till the end?"

"How sweet to hold a newborn baby and feel the pride and joy (s)he gives, but greater still that calm assurance, this child can face uncertain days because He lives.  Because He lives I can face tomorrow, because He lives all fear is gone, because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives."

"Softly and tenderly, Jesus is calling."

"Have we trials and temptations?  Is there trouble anywhere?  We should never be discouraged, take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share?  Jesus knows our every weakness:  Take it to the Lord in prayer."

"Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come, t'was grace that brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home."

"Never let me wander from thee, never leave the God I love; here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above."

"My God and I go in the field together, we walk and talk as good friends should and do; we clasp our hands, our voices ring with laughter, my God and I walk through the meadow's hue..."

"Love one another for love is of God, he who loves is born of God and knows God, he who does not love does not know God, for God is Love. God is Love."

And the list goes on and on and on as the words speak to my soul, warm my heart and become a prayer for the little girl in my arms.  I hope she learns some of these older songs along with the the new.  I hope she has so many wonderful memories with friends who love God as much as she hopefully will.  I hope she chooses to follow Him all of her life, and I hope I will teach her in the way God would have me.  I hope she sees how much I love Him and try to be like Christ in all I do.  I fail all the time, but I won't stop trying all the same.  As I sing I pray for my baby girl, this land in which she will grow, her safety.  I say thank you again and again and again because I want my God to KNOW, really know how much I love this gift He has given me.

I love singing to Eloise.  I don't have the best voice and I can't reach the high notes and I mix up the first and second verses of many of the songs, and I'm sure I sing off key as well.  But sing on I shall because singing to Eloise is really so much more than simply singing to Eloise.

Songs and Surprises

As I near the end of this pregnancy and the beginning of who knows what in the wild world of motherhood, I am forced to slow down.  I allow it too, knowing that it is best for my body as it gets ready to have this baby girl.  I still try to get my hour of exercise a day, but it is usually walking and swimming these days.  I've let running go and been at peace with it (mostly) because when it is uncomfortable the desire is not there.  I mean, I remember flying across the pavement unhindered by a protruding belly or an extra 20 pounds and I miss that, but since it is not the reality of today, I am okay with it.

Mostly...

Until I download some new songs and they make me want to move my feet to the beat and get my boogey on.  Yesterday I decided I was definitely in need of some new tunes.  As my tiredness increases and motivation wanes, new tunes are sometimes what get me out the door and help me keep a good walking pace as well.  I love losing myself in a good song!

The first time I got to listen to them was on the treadmill at the YMCA.  I was planning to meet two friends to swim, but I hadn't walked that morning due to the rain.  It rained pretty steady most of the day, so I decided I'd hop on the treadmill before I swam.  The Y is great because the treadmills face these huge windows and while all I'm looking at is trees and grass, that is a better view than my bedroom door, especially on a rainy day.

After walking for about 8 minutes, I was yearning to run.  I wanted to see how it felt, I wanted to push it just a little, I longed for it.  I worried for a few minutes what others might think of a pregnant woman running on the treadmill (whether they'd think it was unsafe or just plain funny), but then I thought, "who cares" and slowly increased the speed of the belt.  I left it at 13 minutes for a bit and then 12:30 and then 12:00, eventually going down to 11:45 for a bit.

It felt GREAT!  I only ran for about 1.5-2 miles of the 3.5 I did on the treadmill, but it was so invigorating to run, to sweat a little more, to let the song in my ears spur on my feet.  It may be silly, and maybe God isn't interested in these little joys we humans find...but I always think of these late pregnancy runs, however brief and slow they may be, as gifts from him.  Little surprises reminding me to keep my chin up and hang in there.

I made sure to look out onto the freshly washed landscape in front of me and send up a thank you for my little running surprise on the treadmill that day.  I was shortly joined by Shannon and Jane, and getting to talk to Shannon finished out the run/walk nicely.  It had been a GREAT workout and it was followed up with 10 refreshing laps in the pool.  I usually do 20, but after a more intense workout (and the proximity to lunch time) I cut the swim short and just used it to loosen everything up.

My 5 new songs are below in case you too need some new music to get you going on a hot summer morning!

1. Some Nights by Fun.  This is probably my favorite of my new five.  I love this guy's voice and I think if I sang this song, I'd sing it just like he does in this video.

2. Me Without You by Toby Mac.

3. Let's Go by Calvin Harris (featuring Ne-Yo).  "It's not about what you've done, its about what you're doing."  Rings so true for the runner!

4. Don't Wake Me Up by Chris Brown.  The talking makes me laugh at the beginning, but I really like the song/music.  Talking in music always cheeses me out a bit.

5. Wipe Your Eyes by Maroon 5.  I love his voice too and most every song they've made so far...

The Mid-Run Swing

This morning I went for a 3 mile walk with my sis.  It is our Friday morning ritual.  She has several routes we like, but today we did the hilly 3 mile.  Even walking, this one is tough and that is why this pregnant girl likes it!  We finished our walk and I hopped in the car and headed home to get ready for work.  When I cranked up the car, a song by Enrique Iglesias was playing on the radio and all of a sudden I was whisked back to the days of the mid-run swing.

Before I married Jason I lived in a cute little house in a sweet little neighborhood that had a park in it (it was also about a mile from where I live now).  I absolutely loved living there and the little life I had.  And I really loved that park.  It had REAL swings.  Not faded, plastic ones, but big rubber seats that hung on thick chains from really tall metal posts... they basically rocked and you could get some serious air.  The park was along almost every running route I took and the swings always called to me when I ran by.  So I made a deal.  I could stop and swing, but only on the way BACK.  I had to do most of the run first and then I could stop for a swing before heading home.

Those were the days. I wouldn't bring them back now, but they were pretty great then. The wind in my hair, nothing to rush off to do.  No one waiting on me or expecting anything from me.  Endless time to run and swing and run some more.  So on the way back from almost all of my afternoon runs, I would stop at the park for a swing.  I also had a swinging song, and I only listened to this song while I was swinging. I cannot explain why I chose the song I chose or how it became my swinging song.  I would find it on my mp3 player (this was before the ipod came to be), hit play and begin pumping my legs back and forth to build momentum.

The song was "Escape" by Enrique Iglesias.  As he sang in my ear, I would swing higher and higher, and when I got as high as I could go I would lean waaaaay back on the upward swing and pop my head back up as I flew backwards.  What a rush!  If you haven't tried this, you should.  But you need a really good set of swings for it to work.

While swinging and listening to Escape (on repeat, because it was the swinging song), I thought.  I thought about everything.  I thought about the guy I was dating at the time and if it was worthwhile to continue dating him.  The answer was always a "no" until I met Jason and it was usually while I was swinging that I came to that conclusion and sought the courage to do something about it.  I would day dream.  I'd have conversations with people that I'd never get to have, but it was fun to imagine what I'd say anyway.  And sometimes I just drifted from thought to thought, settling on nothing for long.  During these mid-run swings, I could be completely me with no worries, no plans, no deadlines, no limitations, no one's words in my ear but my own...and Enrique's.

Here's how it goes
you and me
up and down but maybe this time we'll get it right
worth the fight cause love is something you can't shake...

So if you go
you should know
its hard to just forget the past, so fast
It was good
It was bad, but it was real and that's all you have
In the end our love matters...

You can run, you can hide, but you can't escape my love...

For some reason I loved these words, and I think it was what I was looking for and what I was determined to find.  It was always nice to return to the swings after a break-up.  The breeze, the upside down trees behind me before I flipped my head back up... It was as if I was ridding myself of the last vestiges of hurt, uncertainty, sadness, and I was free. I would swing higher and higher so that my feet seemed to be reaching for the trees in front of me.  And I'd swing like this until my legs started going to sleep and then I would hop off, change the song, leave the park and continue my run... usually awkwardly until my legs woke up again.

When I met Jason, I'm sure I visited my swings often to see how I felt about this new fellow in my life.  I eventually married him, sold my little house and moved into his.  At some point, without realizing it, "Escape" was no longer on my mp3 player and I did not return to my swings either.  It wasn't planned.  I didn't make a conscious decision to remove the song or stop visiting the swings... it just happened.  I've run by them many times since I've been married but they didn't call to me like they used to.  My new neighborhood also has a nice park, but in the 4+ years I've lived here I have not visited the swings once.

What exactly was the mid-run swing?  I have my theories.  And while I still enjoy a good swing, it is never done for the same reasons it was back then.  However, it has been a pleasant memory to have with me today.  And yes, while I wrote this post, I listened to Enrique sing "Escape."  On repeat.  Because that was the swinging song.

New Roaring Running Song

This morning Jason got up a little earlier than usual so I had some time to lie in bed and contemplate a run of my own.  I knew the morning temps (50) would feel a lot better than 75 later in the afternoon, but I wasn't sure what my legs were going to have in them at 5:45 a.m.  It was so peaceful and comfortable in the quiet of my bedroom with birdsong and chilly air coming in through my open window. I could always run this afternoon...

Then I heard this whisper...the words of a song I'd heard on the radio the day before and promptly downloaded to my ipod.  God's not dead, He's surely alive....

I hopped up and put on my running digs.  A long sleeved shirt and running shorts, with a thin pair of gloves.  I strapped on my Garmin and got my ipod shuffle ready to go.  As I started my warm-up walk and my new song, the sun was just starting to come up and the air was cool and crisp.

Let love explode and bring the dead to life
A love so bold to see a revolution somehow...

I cut my warm-up short and started to jog.  My route began to climb uphill but the words kept me going strong...

Now I'm lost in your freedom
And this world I'll overcome

MY GOD'S NOT DEAD HE'S SURELY ALIVE!  He's living in the inside, roaring like a Lion!

The sun rose higher, lighting up my neighborhood like fire with a backdrop of vibrant blue with a few patches of white.  Birds were everywhere doing their springtime dances, flowers were blooming in almost every yard... it was a simple neighborhood scene, but it was a beautiful one and I felt the words that played in my ears as I ran.

My God's not dead, He's surely alive.  He's living on the inside roaring like a lion!

I could see Him all around me.  I could feel Him inside.  Roaring.  I knew Him to be there in the little miracle growing inside me, in my feet that kept pace with the beat of this powerful song.  I knew the words to be true and it was such a wonderful thing to know!

If you haven't already heard it, give it a listen.  See if it doesn't make you want to move your feet and do a little roaring as well.

A Rockin' Running Playlist

While I love running with my girls or enjoying the quiet peacefulness of a morning run with a gorgeous sunrise as my company, sometimes this girl needs a little boost.  Sometimes when the morning is super cold or super windy or super rainy or all three combined, I need a little something extra to make me feel...well...for lack of a better phrase, bad ass.  And in order to get my "bad ass" on, I have a little playlist to help me.

A few friends and clients have requested some songs for their own playlists and so I am including mine here.  May it give you just the boost you need to get you out the door when you are missing that extra bit of motivation!

If you don't see one of your faves on this list, please include it in the comments section!

I'll start with my newest top two.  These are my current faves that get me going.

1. Blackout - Breathe Carolina.  "I'm only getting started!  I won't blackout!" They aren't talking about running but... it fits doesn't it!

"This won't stop till I say so...this won't stop till I say so!"

2. Good Feeling - Flo Rida.  This would be a great pre-race song.

3. Stronger - Mandisa.  Very powerful lyrics.  I first heard about this song from Katie but it wasn't until I heard it on the radio and really felt the words that I added it to my list.

4. International Love - Pitbull (featuring Chris Brown).  "Don't test me boy...."  See, even if I'm a 32 year old woman with a tiny puff of a pony tail bouncing around behind me, that makes me feel bad ass.

5. Marry the Night - Lady Gaga.  I'm a warrior queen.  And so are you.

6. We Found Love - Rihanna.  Love this beat.

7. Breathing - Jason Derulo.  This is another one with a great beat and I like the chanting in it as well.

8. Turn Me On - Nicki Minaj and David Guetta.  "Make me come alive!"

9. You Make Me Feel - Cobra Starship.  "I'm the baddest baby in the atmosphere."  See, she feels it.

10.  Stereo Hearts - Gym Class Heroes. A very steady beat and I just love this one.

11. Hold Me Together - Royal Tailor.  "I'm getting stronger with You by my side..."

12. Lights (Bassnector Remix) - Ellie Goulding.

13. Welcome to the Club - Manian.  Dance music with a great beat.

14. Black Betty - Ram Jam.

15. The Story of Us - Taylor Swift.

16. Best Love Song - T-Pain.  This is a good one to start your run.

17. Don't Wanna Go Home - Jason Derulo.  No, you don't wanna go home. You wanna RUN!

18. Party Rock Anthem - LMFAO.  "Shake that."

19. Tonight - Toby Mac.  This is one of my all time faves.  Fast and furious, I sometimes have to play it twice.

20. On the Floor - Jennifer Lopez.  "If you're a criminal, kill it on the floor."

21. Blow - Ke$ha.  I know.  Don't judge.

22. Light up the Sky - the Afters. Another powerful one that makes me so thankful to be out running.

23. Take me back - Taio Cruz

24. Higher - Taio Cruz

25. No Other One - Taio Cruz.  As you can see, I like several of his.

26. Avalanche - Manafest.

27. Club Can't Handle Me - Flo Rida.  The road can't handle me either.

28. Raise Your Glass - P!nk.  Are you wrong in all the right ways?  You're probably a runner.

29.  DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love - Usher.  This title cracks me up.

30. Dynamite - Tiao Cruz.  Yep.  Dynamite.

31. La La La - Auburn (featuring Iyaz).

32. Beautiful Monster - Ne-yo.

33. Monday Morning - Melanie Fiona

34. Awake and Alive - Skillet.  I don't need to explain this one.

35. More - Usher.  "I'm a beast, I'm an animal, I'm that monster in the mirror..."

36. Misled - Kool and the Gang.  An oldie but a goodie!

37. Do You Remember - Jay Sean.

38. The Olympic Spirit - John Williams & Boston Pops.  This one is amazing.  I feel triumphant every time I hear it.

39. The Battle - Gladiator Soundtrack.  This one is powerful.  Good for those really tough (and triumphant) days.

40.  Russion Privjet - Basshunter.  This is sort of trance, sort of dance and a great beat!

41. Kernkraft 400 (Sport Chant Stadium Remix) - Zombie Nation.  If you've seen a football game lately, you know this one.

42. Desert Rose - Sting

43. Fire Burning - Sean Kingston. "She's fire burning, fire burning on the dance floor..."  Or on the road.

44. Unbreakable - Fireflight.  Need I say more?  This one truly makes you feel it.

45. O...Saya - Slum Dog Millionaire Soundtrack.  "Like a ninja, with speed I'm nifty..."

Cool down Songs

46. Beautiful Ending - Barlow Girl

47. Enchanted - Taylor Swift

48. Not Over You - Gavin DeGraw

49. The One that got Away - Katy Perry

50. Set Fire to Rain - Adele

And for your Bonus Track: Eye of the Tiger - Survivor.  This is a classic.

Remember to listen responsibly while you run!  Keep the volume reasonable and stay aware of what is going on around you!  Also make sure to check race rules before using headphones in a race.

Happy listening!
